Holy Communion
Holy Communion is a Christian sacrament. It was instituted by the Lord Jesus in the supper He had with His Apostles on the night before He was crucified. The Holy Bible tells us “Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body. Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26: 26-28). He also said, “do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19).
Holy Communion is a spiritual affair. It involves us abiding in God. This is because Jesus said, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them” (John 6 : 56). This is important, because we must abide in Jesus to be spiritually alive and to be fruitful. Jesus said, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15: 4-5).
In John chapter 6, of the Holy Bible, we read how one day Jesus fed over 5000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. The next day these people searched for Him and found Him. They were hoping that He would feed them again. However, Jesus said to them, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” (John 6:27). “For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (John 6:33). “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life” (John 6:48). “This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (John 6: 50-51). “ Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6: 54).
Therefore, Christians come together to eat some bread and drink some wine to remember Jesus as He asked us to. We remember that he died for us to save us. In doing so, we receive the forgiveness of our sins and establish ourselves in everlasting life as Jesus promised.
